Essie French Affair

French Affair was, along with Sand Tropez, my very first Essie; I bought them at the same time. I wore this polish a ton back when I only had a dozen or so polishes in my stash and it's still a sentimental favorite of mine. Whenever I need a light pink, this is one of my go-to polishes. It's not a unique color by any stretch of the imagination, but it's very versatile for layering and is appropriate for any occassion.

As much as I have a soft spot for French Affair, the formula isn't without its issues. It's thin and can be runny if you're not careful with your brush. I used three coats here. Sorry about the lack of clean-up in this swatch, by the way. I used French Affair as a base for layering so I just snapped a few quick pics in between steps. I'm excited to show you step 2 tomorrow! :)

What was your first Essie? Is it a polish you still wear?

  1. I probably owned an Essie or two throughout the years...but the first one I purchased after giving in to my full-blown polish addiction was Pink-a-boo. I love that shimmery pink!

    1. Yeah, I still like it even though the formula isn't so hot. It's such a cute pink though!

  3. Very nice pink that's a good staple to have it any collection! My first Essie was Borrowed & Blue, and it's still one of my favourite polishes, even if I don't wear it a whole lot anymore. :)

    1. Thank you! Borrowed & Blue is a great color! I remember wanting it quite a bit when it came out, but I had a dupe of it already. Still wanted it though haha.

  4. Gosh - I could not tell ya what my first Essie was - I have been in this current collection since late 80's and a couple in here are from mid 80s!!! Pre OPI days even...I do kind of recall getting some Essie in late 90's...they were hard for me to get them as I don't have any beauty supply stores where I live - and the one about 60 miles from here has only been in business for the past 2 yrs and only has OPI. I knew Essie's little cute bottles well however and could spot them soon as I went in a supply store when I was in a bigger city. They always have had some formula issues in my book - those watery ones...and then they have so many with shimmer that is in the bottle but does not translate to the nail...still I have some big favs in Essie and I look carefully at each collection when released. The French Affair collection was a good one - I love Nice is Nice, Sand Tropez and I think I have 1 or 2 others from that collection as well.

    1. Essie is, I think, definitely the most hit or miss formula-wise of the big mainstream brands. When they get it right, they really get it right, but there isn't a lot of consistency with the quality of their formulas. I think I wound up with three colors in all from the French Affair Collection. It really was a great set of colors!
