Deborah Lippmann recently had a promo on her website where every order came with a free bottle of Yellow Brick Road, a yellow jelly, so I snagged it by ordering one of my major lemmings, Mermaid's Dream. I'd been intrigued by Yellow Brick Road for a long time but wasn't sure if I could pull it off, so this seemed like the perfect opportunity.
Now that I've finally tried it, I'm not quite sure how I feel about Yellow Brick Road. I can't remember the last time I had such conflicting emotions about a polish. However, I must say that the formula is not the best. It's on the thick side and really goopy, so I'd recommend waiting a bit between coats. Since it's both a light color and a jelly, any uneveness in opacity and application is more visible than usual. Yellows aren't exactly known for their stellar formulas but it's kind of a bummer to see a high-end polish with such noticeable issues. (Please excuse the dimpled topcoat, by the way. I'm not sure if it's a result of the formula or that I went to sleep shortly after painting my nails.)
I opted to wear this semi-opaque to preserve the jelly finish while avoiding the horribly jaundiced look this polish can create when worn sheerer. At the first and second coat, it just looked like I had extremely stained nails. But once I built it up to the fourth coat, which is what you see here, I think it looks alright. It has an appealing squishiness to it.
It's certainly an interesting and unique polish; you don't see many yellow jellies. I actually think this would look really beautiful on someone with dark skin, but I think I personally may be too fair to pull this off. I don't love it, but I certainly don't hate it either. I appreciate how different Yellow Brick Road is and I'm happy to have it in my collection. I don't have anything else remotely like it.
Thanks for posting this! How about using it in jelly sandwich?
ReplyDeleteGood idea! I think it would look cute with a multicolored glitter!
DeleteI just got this same polish yesterday and I have to say that mine was very different from yours. My Yellow Brick Road was very thin and went on easy. I used 8 coats of it before I finally decided that was how it was going to look. I don't care for the color on me either though. Guess it was good it was free.
ReplyDeleteThat's so strange! Mine was pretty bad in terms of formula. I don't mind the color on me, although it could have been better, but I think it's super tricky to pull off overall. I don't count myself as one of the lucky few who can rock something like this.
DeleteI'm not really fair, I'm more beige toned, but I'm not sure I could pull this off either. I haven't see a yellow jelly before, so it's definitely unique!
ReplyDeleteI agree, it's very unique...which unfortunately makes it difficult to pull off haha. I'm not sure if a more beige tone would be able to make this work. I just have too much yellow in my skin for this, so maybe your beige tones would work!
DeleteThank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI really love yellows and I would have gotten this one if I didn't read your post as well as the comments.
Now I believe it is way too expensive for such polish.
I don't like the fact that it's so sheer, I don't like the goopy formula, nor do I like it's 8 coats version...
And after all, by your pictures it doesn't seem like a very nice yellow. I've seen much nicer, although not jelly.
You're welcome! I would agree you can find nicer yellows out there--especially considering the price on this one. I think what I like most about this is the novelty and uniqueness of it but I wouldn't label it a must-have.
DeleteAlthough it didnt work for you, I think it looks good! This is totally on my wishlist and I am lemming for this! I cant wait to have it! Thanks for the swatches! (=
ReplyDeleteThanks! I am intrigued by it and keep find myself looking at my hands but I can't make up my mind about it. It's VERY unique but I'm not sure if that's a good thing in my particular case haha. I'd be interested to see it on you though if you pick this one up!!
DeleteI love the swatches. My favorite color is yellow so this just calls my name. Even if I may end up using a white base I'll probably get this one day.
ReplyDeleteOoo, I didn't think of trying a white base with this one! I may have to do that...
DeleteI too will have to try a white or nude base - thinking right off of Deborah Lippman's Naked under this one to warm it up - white won't really warm it up like a warm nude will.
DeleteInteresting polish. Like you, I'm not sure how I feel about it.
ReplyDeleteYep, it's definitely different! I am still divided about it.
DeleteI have the same issue as you do over YBR - waited ages before I got it. Now I find if I put Glitter in the Air (DL) or the Revlon dupe - Whimsical over it and then do a jelly sandwitch with YBR - it starts to take away that this is making me look sick effect. So think jelly sandwitching this one.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why but I can't help wanting this. I've heard many reviews such as yours saying that they have been unsure how they feel about it, but I think I would love it! Plus, I don't think it looks all that bad on you at all!
