Review & Giveaway: Vox and Coal Nail Polish Rack

As polish lovers, oftentimes we get so caught up in the joy of collecting that we lose sight of one of the harsh realities of our hobby: "Where the hell am I going to put all this polish?!" I'd been storing my stash using a mix of plastic drawers and acrylic racks. While I have waaaayyy too much polish to keep it all contained in one single unit, lately I'd been forced to admit that my set-up was based more on function than form. Since my stash is in our living room (yep, I shamelessly put the crazy on full display for all our visitors) I figured it could use some sprucing up.

Enter Vox and Coal, an Etsy shop offering handmade nail polish racks to store and display your precious stash in style! When they contacted me asking if they could work with me to create the custom polish rack of my dreams...well, really, what girl could resist? ;)

The owners of Vox and Coal were a pleasure to work with. We did some chatting back and forth via e-mail to figure out what design I wanted for my polish rack and they were very friendly and accommodating. They had the idea of doing a paint job inspired by one of my lemmings, Illamasqua Raindrops, and I asked if they could partner that with some type of Art Deco-inspired pattern. Here's the paint and pattern combo they came up with. Isn't it beautiful?

And now the big reveal: the rack itself! It's hanging in the living room, above my swatching station.

The rack comes with everything needed to mount it on the wall, so installation is fairly simple...and by that, I mean I had my boyfriend hang it for me, hahaha. But he said it was easy enough. The mounting equipment provided with the rack feels very stable against the wall. I pounded on the wall, right next to the rack, and neither the rack or the polish bottles shook.

The rack measures 24" x 24", so it's nicely sized. It's big enough to hold a considerable amount of polish, but not so large that it takes up a ton of space. I used the rack to display a variety of brands--mostly ones with square bottles so there was some type of visual uniformity.

So exactly how many bottles can this rack hold? Well, for reference, the shelves are wide enough so that each one can comfortably hold 20 Essie bottles or 17 OPI bottles across. But the shelves are also deep enough that you can easily place the polishes two-deep, so that means you could hold up to 40 Essie bottles or 34 OPI bottles per shelf. (With my Butter London polishes, I could even get them to three-deep and the unboxed Rainbow Honey minis are four-deep!)That brings us to a grand total of up to 200 Essie bottles or 170 OPI bottles for the whole rack! Impressive!

I left some empty space on the bottom shelf since I have tons of untrieds from the brands I chose to display, so those will gradually be making their way to their permanent home on the rack as I (hopefully) work through my untrieds. But I currently have about 170 polishes on there, with plenty of room to spare.

The construction feels very sturdy and even with the amount of polish I put on each shelf, the shelves weren't showing any strain. They're made from solid wood, so they can take quite a bit of weight. You can tell this rack was made with time and care. I expect it to last a good, long time!

Overall, I am extremely impressed with this rack. It's sturdily built, lovely to look at, and holds a good amount of polish. The customer service was excellent, with Vox and Coal providing updates and communication every step of the way as my rack was designed, assembled and shipped out to me. I couldn't ask for more!

So, like what you see? Well then enter to win your very own polish rack from Vox and Coal! They've been kind enough to offer up a free rack to give away to one of my readers! The winner will get to pick a free rack from Vox and Coal's offerings on Etsy--awesome, right?

Jamberry Nails Autism Awareness Nail Wraps: Review & Giveaway

TGIF! How about a little giveaway fun to start off your weekend? I've got some awesome nail wraps from Jamberry Nails to share with you today AND a chance for you to win a set of wraps of your choice too!

Let me start with the wraps themselves! I received these wraps for review from Amy, an independent consultant with Jamberry Nails. Amy was an absolute pleasure to work with and always willing to offer help and advice. There are a lot of fun Jamberry designs to choose from (you can see them all on Amy's website, if you like) and the design I received was the Autism Awareness wraps. They retail for $15 and one of the cool things about this particular design is that Jamberry Nails donates $2 to the Autism Society for every purchase of these wraps. The puzzle piece is a commonly used symbol for autism awareness campaigns, so the design serves as a beautifully colorful reminder of the cause it supports.

The nail wraps themselves are easy to apply. Each sheet of wraps comes with lots of different sizes (some wraps are big enough to use on toes too, if you like) so you just peel off the size that is closest to your nail. You can trim the wraps too if you need to. I find it works best to choose a wrap that is slightly bigger, since the shrink a bit in the application process, but not so big that the wrap is touching your cuticle or your skin. Then, heat the wrap under a blow dryer for a few seconds and place it on your nail. A rubber cuticle pusher or something similar helps to seal the wrap completely in place around your cuticle. Cut off the unused half of the wrap and save it for another nail. File down the excess using a downward swiping motion, then give your nail another blast of heat. Press down to completely seal the edges and you're done! You can watch this video if you'd like to see the application process in action.

I think the hardest part for me is getting the placement right, but that's more a user error issue than anything wrong with the product. You don't need to put any topcoat over the wraps and they wear like iron when applied correctly. I once wore a set of these when I moved out of my apartment and they stayed completely intact through the whole ordeal! These wraps are especially great if you need a mani that will stand up to whatever you're going to throw at it or if you're going on a trip and don't want to worry about regular polish. Plus, they're just plain fun!

To remove the wraps, you just soak them in acetone for 20-30 seconds, then rub them off. Or you can blast them with heat from your dryer again and use an orange stick to help break the adhesive seal on the wraps.

Want to try some for yourself? Well, Amy has also been kind enough to host a giveaway for Nailed readers! Thank you, Amy! The winner will receive a set of Jamberry Nails wraps in their choice of design. Just go to Amy's website and pick out your favorite Jamberry Nails design, then leave me a note in the comments about which one you like best!

ShopNBC Beauty Box: Giveaway & Review

I recently received an amazing beauty box from television shopping network ShopNBC in honor of their "Beautiful You" Beauty weekend, a 48-hour event coming up on March 23rd and 24th. Opening up this box was like beauty Christmas! There are so many different goodies to play with, covering a huge variety of areas from skincare to color to haircare to mascara to nail polish! Here's what was inside!

And in list format: Silk'n SensEpil, iampur Pain Relieving Rub, Suzanne Somers Organics Travel Kit, Angel Lift Dermastrips Kit, VB Beauty Miracle Eye & Wrinkle Spot Treatment Set, Lola Cosmetics Universal Colorless Powder, LaRocca Cellular Gold Hydrating Body Balm, Angel Lift Dermasome Moisturizing Relaxant, Lola Cosmetics Pin-Up Pout Plumping Lipstick in Marilyn, Magnifibres Brush-on False Lashes, Epione Signature Eye Cream, Pur Minerals Double Ego Mascara, Pur-lisse Pur-Moist, Pur-lisse Pur-Youth Preserve, MAXIessentials Liftoff Root Lift and Volumizing Spray, FairyDrops Mascara, Absolute Magnetic Nail Enamel in Bleu, Aminogenesis Age Control Dual Treatment Anti Glycation Serum, Pur Minerals Big Blink Mascara, Borghese Brightening Mud, Skinn Cosmetics Amethyst Collection (contains eye color stick, lipgloss, eyeshadow palette and nail polish).

Phew, I think that's everything! ;) And guess what?! ShopNBC sent along another box for me to give away to one lucky reader too! I'm so excited to give one of you guys a chance to add some great new treats to your beauty stash! Details about the giveaway can be found at the end of this post!

To give you a little sneak peek at some of the brands and products that will be a part of the Beautiful You event, I'll be sharing a few of my beauty box picks with you today! If you have any questions about any of the products not featured in this post, please let me know in the comments and I'd be more than happy to share some additional impressions with you! :)

Pur Minerals Big Blink Mascara

Meet one of my new favorite mascaras: Pur Minerals Big Blink! Big Blink promises extreme length and volume, plus the conditioning benefits with ingredients like Argan Oil and Vitamin E--and it delivers, bigtime! Big Blink has a plastic wand with smaller bristles on the end to help grab those hard-to-reach inner lashes. It reminds me a lot of the wand for Benefit They're Real!, which is a big plus in my book.

As for the mascara itself, it's honestly one of the best I've tried! It delivers volume without sacrificing length and the plastic wand separates lashes beautifully. It's water-resistant and doesn't flake, smudge or smear but is easy to remove in the shower (no scrubbing or raccoon eyes) once you're ready to take it off.

 Bare lashes

One coat of Big Blink Mascara

Love, love, love this! If you're in the market for a new mascara, give Big Blink a look!

LaRocca Cellular Gold Hydrating Body Balm

At first I wondered what practical reason there could be to include 24K gold in a skincare product, but the included brochure explains that this balm is made with an exclusive component that LaRocca calls their Cellular Gold Complex. The complex is made with 24K gold and is supposed to "promote electron transfer with the metal ions naturally found in the skin, stimulating cell turnover."

I'm always skeptical of really fanciful claims like that (I can't confirm or deny if the gold in this balm delivers the effects promised), but what I can tell you for sure is that this is an incredibly rich body balm--one of the nicest I've ever used, in fact. In addition to gold, it also contains shea butter, olive oil and Cupuacu butter, so it feels very moisturizing. It gave my skin a pretty, healthy glow after applying.

The texture feels super luxurious and a little goes a long way. I also have to add that the 90s child in me absolutely loves how this smells exactly like a grape Push-Up ice cream bar! Remember those?! I used to have Push-Up bars all the time when I went over to my grandma's house as a kid. :)

Nestle Push Up

iampur Pain Relieving Rub

I love this stuff! It's a cream you can message into those pesky aches and pains you get throughout the day. Although originally designed for people with arthritis, I think anyone with sore muscles would love the way this feels! I got a neck rub with this (in the name of science, of course) and it was heaven! This rub gives a cooling sensation that's very relieving and relaxing. There is a mentholated smell to it, but nothing overwhelming or too "medicated." I have to be on my feet a lot at work, plus I've got back problems and a bum knee (I'm 22 going on 82), so I will definitely be keeping this in my purse for when my muscles start to ache!

FairyDrops Mascara

I have been wanting to try a FairyDrops mascara forever, so I was thrilled to find this little tube inside the beauty box! FairyDrops is a Japanese brand with a loyal cult following here in the states. The brush design is very unique and probably the most stand-out feature of this mascara.

The curved shape of the brush really does a great job of grabbing and coating all of your lashes. It also gives them a nice curl and separates flawlessly--no clumps or spidery lashes here! This mascara delivers sky-high results. I do wish it was a bit more volumizing (my lashes are sparse and stubby naturally, so I love to amp 'em up any way I can) but if you want crazy length that still looks natural and clump-free, I think you'll like Fairy Drops!

One coat of Fairy Drops Mascara

Silk'n SensEpil

Silk'n SensEpil is an at-home hair removal system that promises permanent, virtually painless hair removal using pulsed light technology. You can use it on your legs, arms, underarms and bikini line. Since using this product requires a series of treatments over the course of several weeks, I'm going to give this product its own in-depth review after I've had more time to use it and study my results. I was super excited to try this puppy out, so since I've administered one treatment on my legs and underarms already, I'll share some initial impressions with you.

The device itself is very easy to use. If you can press a button, you can operate the SensEpil! All you do is turn it on, press the device against your skin and administer a pulse. There is a flash of light, similar to the flash you'd see when someone takes your picture, then you move the device over a few inches and repeat the process. Doing both my legs took around 30 minutes total.

 The head of the device

Obviously everyone's pain threshold and level of sensitivity is different, but for me, using SensEpil was painless. After administering a pulse, I only felt a gentle warming and tingling sensation. In areas where my skin is a bit thinner, like around my underarms. I would occasionally experience a very slight sting that only lasted a second or so. My skin didn't show any signs of irritation afterwards. This is way better than waxing!

I am really excited to continue using the SensEpil! It's FDA-approved and I've read some great reviews for it, so I'm hoping to see some awesome results myself. So far, I really like how easy and painless it is to use. It retails for $499, which may cause some sticker shock at first, but if it really does deliver permanent hair removal, the price of the SensEpil will be way lower than a lifetime of razors or waxing treatments and certainly cheaper than in-office treatments like laser hair removal, which can cost thousands of dollars. Stay tuned for an update after a few weeks!

Lola Pin-Up Pout Plumping Lipstick in Marilyn

Lola Pin-Up Pout Plumping Lipstick in Marilyn is a classic retro red. All of the lipsticks in this line are named for some of old Hollywood's most famous beauties and this one, of course, is named for Ms. Marilyn Monroe.

This lipstick has a vanilla scent, very similar to MAC lipsticks, and there is a tingling sensation (from the plumping agent) when you first put it on that lasts for a few minutes. My lips did look a bit fuller as the tingle started up, but I can never tell if it is just my imagination with all of these plumping lip products!

The formula and wear are both absolutely fabulous though. Marilyn has a balmy texture to it that glides across the lips. It's fairly hydrating and holds up through eating and drinking. Also, I adore the little pop-out mirror that is tucked away on the side of the tube! There's a small jewel clip that keeps it pressed down so that it doesn't add any bulkiness to the tube itself. As soon as you open the lipstick, the mirror springs right out--perfect for on-the-go touch-ups! Why don't more lipsticks have this?

THE GIVEAWAY

As I mentioned at the top of this post, ShopNBC sent along a second set of beauty treats for me to award to one lucky reader! The winner will receive a beauty box containing:

Lola Cosmetics Pin-Up Pout Plumping Lipstick in Marilyn, Lola Cosmetics Universal Colorless Powder, Absolute Magnetic Nail Enamel in Bleu, Suzanne Somers Organics Travel Kit, Angel Lift Dermastrips Kit, Angel Lift Dermasome Moisturizing Relaxant, Aminogenesis Age Control Dual Treatment Anti Glycation Serum, iampur Pain Relieving Rub, Skinn Cosmetics Amethyst Collection, MAXIessentials Liftoff Root Lift and Volumizing Spray, LaRocca Cellular Gold Hydrating Body Balm, FairyDrops Mascara, Magnifibres Brush-on False Lashes, Pur-lisse Pur-Moist, Pur-lisse Pur-Youth Preserve, Epione Signature Eye Cream, Borghese Brightening Mud

You can see all of these items in the picture at the top of this post, although please note the beauty box you receive will have slightly different contents (ie. missing a few items) than the one pictured. Win A Lifetime of Shellac!

A while back my friend asked me if I stopped buying polish right now, for the rest of my life, would I have enough to last me until I die? To which my only response is that life without new polish is too grim of a future for me to even contemplate! Luckily our friendly neighbors to the north over at Nail Polish Canada are saving one lucky lady from such a terrible fate by giving away a lifetime(-ish) of Shellac! Check out the press release details below. (P.S. This post is not sponsored in any way--just thought I'd share a fabulous contest with you all!)

WIN SHELLAC FOR LIFE ($1266 value) - NAILPOLISHCANADA.COM TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE

“To be fair, it’s actually only a 25 year supply, so we can only hope the winner dies early to keep me an honest woman” - Nikki Smith, VP of Glitter, Nail Polish Canada.

CND Shellac is a cross between nail polish and gel which is cured under a UV lamp and lasts up to 14 days without chipping. Chipped nails are an important issue that affect lives in many ways.

“We’ve invented substantial research and the reason women slap or bite in a catfight is fear of chipping their nails. Hopefully, together, we can build a world where a woman can throw a punch at the bitch who kissed her boyfriend without worrying about chips” said Ms. Smith.

The prize will go to whomever can show that their life will be most impacted by winning Shellac for life. Be it better, or worse.

Maybe it stops your polish addiction long enough that you can save money, go to school, become a doctor, go to Africa and start saving lives. Did we say that this contest saves lives? Now we did.

Or maybe you’re just looking for a little understanding, “My husband will finally understand that other people take polish as seriously as me...” - Sarah P.

Or perhaps the result won’t be as positive, “I’ll probably spend all my time painting my nails, not go to work, get fired, now I’m homeless, damn you NPC.” - Beth C

If you or a loved one is still stuck in a world of chips, smudges and wasting countless hours re-doing nails we urge you to take a stand. Enter at http://www.nailpolishcanada.com/categories/cnd-shellac.html

Grand prize will go to the best description of how winning a lifetime supply of Shellac will change their life.

Winner selected August 7, 2012.

Prize Details & Entry
Grand Prize (Value $1266): 33 Bottles of CND Shellac + 36 Watt UV Lamp + 5 Topcoat + 5 Basecoat + Scrub Fresh.

How much Shellac do I need to last 25 years?

You win some, you lose some, right? Rescue Beauty Lounge Catherine graced my digits during this ill-fated quiz, so I'll be showing her off to you tomorrow! Stay tuned. :)
