Deborah Lippmann Happily Ever After Preview

This spring saw several brands venture into bridal collections for the first time: Butter London and now Deborah Lippmann! DL has released a mini trio of bridal polishes called Happily Ever After, which retails for $29 and is exclusive to Sephora. All three polishes feature the matteen (satin) finish that debuted in last winter's Silk Collection. Take a look!

L To R: Going To The Chapel, Endless Love, Something Blue

The matteens can be brushstroke-y and a little frustrating to work with, but I really like the look of the finish itself. Going To The Chapel looks very similar to Pseudo Silk Kimono, which I already have, but I might pick up this set if it goes on clearance. That's how I was able to snag DL's Wicked trio so maybe I'll get lucky again!

Review: Deborah Lippmann Gel Lab

For years, Seche Vite has been my go-to topcoat. Yes, she has issues (thickness, shrinkage, etc.) and she can be temperamental at times, but despite several attempts to find a better topcoat, I always came back to good ole SV...

And then Deborah Lippmann Gel Lab came along and changed everything!

Gel Lab is a basecoat and topcoat duo that promises the long wear and high shine of a gel manicure, without the UV lamp. Now, when you change your polish as often as I do, you don't necessarily need a topcoat and basecoat that 1-2 weeks of wear, but I have a job where I use my hands a lot, so durability certainly doesn't hurt! I was so impressed with the mini sizes I'd tried of Deborah Lippmann's Addicted To Speed Topcoat and Fast Girls Basecoat that it peaked my curiosity in the Gel Lab set.

The biggest things I look for in a base and topcoat are:
1) good, workable consistency--not so thin that it's runny or too thick to the point that it's goopy
2) fast-drying
3) minimal (preferably no) drying issues like shrinkage, bubbling and rippling
4) durable.

So let's delve into each of those points in respect to Gel Lab!

Consistency: This to me is where Gel Lab really outshines SV. I get so frustrated with how thick SV gets about halfway through the bottle and it has all these annoying little "quirks" that come with that! Gel Lab has the perfect viscosity for me. The Lippmann brush is a favorite of mine, which adds to the ease of application. The bristles fan out across the nail, allowing for smooth, even application.

I didn't feel the need to add any thinner until about the last third or so of the Gel Lab topcoat bottle and even then, that was mostly to make it easier for me to reach down into the bottle and get product onto the brush than it was due to a change in consistency. As for the basecoat, I'm still only about 40% of the way through my first bottle after several months of use, but so far it's maintained the same perfect consistency throughout!

Fast-drying: Both the basecoat and the topcoat dry very quickly. Deborah recommends allowing about a minute of dry time between each step of a Gel Lab mani--basecoat, color and then topcoat--and I've found that works perfectly. After only a few minutes, the topcoat hardens to the point that I feel confident in using my hands again without fear of denting my polish.

Drying Issues: Other than a very occasional bubble here and there, I haven't noticed any "quirks" with Gel Lab topcoat. In my experience, it never shrinks, which is a huge plus over SV! Gel Lab dries to a high-shine finish that doesn't quite manage that squishy look of a real gel mani, but still gives you that extra gleam that any good topcoat should.

Durable: Given that Gel Lab promises gel manicure results at home, this will be the lengthiest part of the review. Now, I have never had an actual gel manicure, so I can't vouch to how this compares, but in doing some research from other reviewers, results seem varied in terms of whether or not they think Gel Lab lasts as long as a gel manicure does. So if you go in expecting Gel Lab to be as bulletproof as salon gel manicure, you may not see those exact results. Nail polish reacts differently to different body chemistry, so with any base and topcoat system, your mileage may vary.

Another point to keep in mind is that with the exposure to UV light and the special removal process, salon gel manicures can also be very harsh on your hands and nails. So these gel alternative systems are much kinder to your skin and nails in the long run, while still providing a respectable wear time.

But as someone who just wants a topcoat that is easy to work with, dries fast and holds up through several days of wear and tear, I could not be happier with the performance and wear time on Gel Lab! One tip that I've found is that capping the tips (running the brush along the free edge of your nail) after each step of the Gel Lab process is the key to really getting the most longevity out of your manicure. When I do this, I always get days of flawless, chip-free wear!

I have done many manicures with Gel Lab over the past few months, to the point that I feel comfortable vouching for its durability with a wide variety of polish brands. I haven't found any brand that it doesn't seem to play well with. But I decided to do an "official" wear test for this review using one of Deborah Lippmann's own polishes, Hannah, to give you an example of how Gel Lab holds up. Pretty much the longest I am capable of wearing a polish without really feeling the itch to change it is about five days, so here is four and a half days into my Hannah manicure:

As you can see, I easily could have worn Hannah for quite a while longer. All ten fingers were chip-free and the tipwear was virtually imperceptible. The topcoat also maintained its high-shine finish and still looked freshly applied, with no visible dents or scratches.

So yes, it's finally happened: I have a base and topcoat system that has dethroned Seche! Gel Lab is my new HG! There's really not anything I don't like about it. Yes, at $45 for the set (containing two 0.5 oz bottles), it's on the pricier side. But considering that you use base and topcoat with virtually every mani, to me, a good system is well worth investing in. It makes painting your nails a simpler, more enjoyable experience and it lets you get the most out of all the polishes you love!

Twinsie Tuesday: Sally Hansen Salon Effects In Disk-O Queen

We're busting out our nail wraps, stickers and decals for this week's Twinsie Tuesday theme: nail appliqués! There are a couple different ways this theme could be interpreted and I decided to go with nail wraps. Sally Hansen makes some of my favorites. They're sturdy, easy to apply and there are lots of designs to pick from!

The one I went with this time is called Disk-O Queen. These wraps have a half moon design in gold and burgundy glitter.

I'd never used nail wraps with glitter in them before, so I wondered if they would be more difficult to work with or if they'd feel gritty at all. Thankfully, the answer to both questions is no. These feel and apply the same as the other Sally Hansen wraps I've tried in the past. My only complaint is that on the burgundy part of the wrap, you can see that the actual wrap itself is tinted burgundy underneath, to provide a clear outline for the half moon design, and then there's a glitter overlay on top. I wish the gold portion had a tinted base as well, to make it more opaque, because I could see a bit more of my natural nail peeking through that I normally like.

But that being said, I enjoyed these wraps! I think the glitter is a fun twist on a classic design like the half moon, which has been around for decades. I'm not really a French manicure kind of girl, but I do love the half moon look! I like how it accentuates the curve of the nail bed, plus retro designs always make me feel all fancy and lady-like!

Discuss.

No word yet on an official release date, but if past years are any indication, I'd guess we'll see these in stores sometime in August. Which shades have already made your wishlist?

Urban Decay Addiction

Today they're known primarily for their kickass eyeshadow, but did you know Urban Decay actually started as a nail polish company? In the past year or so, UD has started releasing polishes again and I think Addiction might just be the prettiest of them all!

Addiction is a smoky, gunmetal-infused green packed with gold and olive shimmer. The shimmer is so dense that Addiction looks more or less like a foil polish. I've seen a few bloggers compare this shade to Chanel Graphite, so if you missed out on that polish, Addiction could be a great alternative!

This mani is from a little while back so I don't remember exactly how many coats I used. It was either three or four. I do recall though that the overall formula was really nice. Addiction wore very well on me, with no chipping and only minimal tip wear.

Do you have any Urban Decay polishes? I really want to try another one of their polishes called Zodiac!

Born Pretty Black Swan Water Decals: Review & Swatches

Born Pretty Store's water decals are probably my all-time favorite nail art product. They're so fun and easy to use, plus they make it look like you spent hours on your nails, when really all it took was a few minutes. They work just like a temporary tattoo: cut 'em, wet 'em, then stick 'em on. Cover with topcoat and voila: instant mini masterpieces on your nails!

This time around, we'll be checking out some black swan water decals. I love the movie "Black Swan" and that's what instantly came to mind when I saw these decals. I paired them with Illamasqua Scorch, a white creme, to create a look that's more minimalist and that lets the decals really take center stage.

It just dawned on me that I'm kind of continuing the feather theme from yesterday's post for Butter London Branwen's Feather. It wasn't intentional! Anywho, the decals were a breeze to apply. I only used about half of them for this mani (both hands), so I still have plenty left over for another time. I think next time I'm going to try them over a nice neutral grey. The whole set will only set you back $1.99, so that's just one buck a mani!

Butter London Branwen's Feather

Butter London Branwen's Feather is a sleek blackened purple with subtle red and silver shimmer. This polish is meant to mimic the look of a raven's feather. If you've ever seen one up close, then you know they're not completely black; they have a bit or iridescence to them--and that's where the shimmer in Branwen's Feather comes in. It's a cool concept for a polish, really!

The formula is lovely and didn't give me any trouble whatsoever. I used three coats here.

With all the advertising for the upcoming Maleficent movie kicking into high gear, I can't help thinking this is something that character would wear. Overall, my favorite thing about this polish has to be the shimmer! It really livens up the base color and keeps it from veering too far into near-black territory.

All the grey and rainy weather here lately has put me in the mood for a good vampy shade and Branwen's Feather certainly scratched that itch! I think any vamp lover would be very pleased to add this one to their collection.
