Review: Lush Cupcake Fresh Face Mask

Fact: Everyone likes cupcakes.

But if you're looking to get your chocolate kick without all of those pesky calories, why not check out a face mask made with rich, chocolately goodness? Lush's Cupcake Fresh Face Mask is a luxurious treat designed to cleanse and clarify oily skin. I've tried a few other masks from Lush and this one is my favorite so far! Cupcake contains Rhassoul mud to cleanse and de-grease, cocoa butter to soften the skin and fresh mint to act as an antiseptic. The mask smells just like chocolate cupcake batter, except with a mint kick. I love the scent!

While sweating up a storm at both a baseball game and an outdoor concert last weekend, I was afraid I'd be greeted by a big breakout at the start of the week. So in addition to keeping at my regular routine with my Lush Herbalism cleanser (which is still working great, by the way--no real breakouts since I started using it!), I popped on a Cupcake mask as soon as I got home from my adventure, to help get all the gunk and grime out of my pores.

This is typically how I use Cupcake: as a "booster" for when I feel things might be starting to go south with my skin. It's great for warding off acne and giving your skin some gentle but effective exfoliation. Plus the cool temperature of the mask when it's straight from the fridge feels amazingly refreshing on a hot summer day! Once the mask is on, you can really feel it going to work, although I didn't find that it stung like some deep cleansing masks do. There's a bit of a tingle, but the sensation fades fairly quick. After about 5-10 minutes, I step in the shower to wash it all off and do a little scrubbing action with the remnants of the mask for some mild surface exfoliation. Afterwards, Cupcake leaves my face feeling clean, fresh and beautifully smooth.

You probably shouldn't use this mask more than two or three times a week, as using it on consecutive days will likely prove too much for acne-prone skin. A single pot costs $6.95 and you can get about six to eight masks per pot, depending on how thickly you apply them, so it really is a great value. The masks need to be refrigerated because they contain fresh ingredients with no preservatives, so the only place you can buy them is in-store. The masks have a shelf life of three weeks, but personally I just treat them like food: So long as you store them properly and check for changes in scent and consistency, you can get away with using them a bit longer than the official shelf life.

Have you tried Cupcake? What are some of your favorite face masks--Lush or otherwise?

    1. It smells good enough to eat! I haven't tried to sneak a taste though--not sure I'd like the results too much. :p

  2. I love Lush and their face masks!! :D
So far I have tried Cupcake, BB Seaweed and Oatifix. Oatifix is my absolute favourite (the scent is just so amazing!) and I have two tubs of it sitting in my freezer XD

    1. BB Seaweed is next in my list to try but I definitely want to give Oatifix a try in the winter! I smelled it in the store and it is heavenly! :)

  3. I've tried Cupcake, and I love the scent of it but I feel that it doesn't do as much for my skin as Mask of Magnaminty and Catastrophe Cosmetic. I really want to get around to trying all of them, though! I almost have 5 empty pots so I can get one free :) Last time I was in there I got some Dark Angels to try since my Angels on Bare Skin is almost gone and they convinced me to buy their summer promotional box and a solid shampoo. My mother says I have a Lush problem.

    1. I haven't tried Magnaminty yet but it's on my list! I just got a pot of Catastrophe Cosmetic last weekend when I was home. I've only used it once so far but I like it! Smells so good too! I love Dark Angels for those super hot, sweaty days when I want to feel squeaky clean. Mike got a solid shampoo (Soak and Float) for his trip and he loves it. Originally he wasn't going to use it until after he left, but he tried it once and was immediately hooked. And I feel ya, I totally have a Lush problem! In addition to a mail polish and clothing problem haha.

    2. I just tried my Soak and Float last night! I'll have to see how it holds up, but today my hair is soft without using conditioner. And since reading your blog, my meager polish collection has steadily been growing.

  4. How were you not tempted to lick the excess off your fingers!? It just LOOKS too delicious! This would be bad for me. I would have to go make cupcakes and probably eat half a dozen after I used this!

    1. It has been sooooo tempting sometimes just to have a little taste! But I've resisted. The dash of mint to this is just enough to (usually) keep my chocolate cravings at bay, because it doesn't smell *exactly* like cupcakes, although sometimes it does make me want ice cream afterwards. :)
