Essie To Buy Or Not To Buy

I recently picked up some polishes from Essie's newest collection, Navigate Her. The first one I have to show you is To Buy Or Not To Buy, a lilac creme with subtle blue shimmer. The shimmer looks awesome in the bottle but more or less vanishes on the nail. Good thing the base color is still so pretty!

And a bottle shot so you can see the blue shimmer that doesn't really come across on the actual nail.

To Buy Or Not To Buy is lighter, more warm-toned and less blue than Essie Lilacism so if you already have Lilacism you don't have to worry about dupes. The formula on To Buy Or Not To Buy reminds me a lot of old Essie: a bit runny and prone to pooling. It's still workable though and for a pastel, it covers well. I used three coats here. You can see the blue shimmer peeking out it you get it at just the right angle but most of the time this looks like a plain creme. Would this be more awesome if the blue shimmer actually showed up? Yes, but thankfully I really love the color and based on other swatches I'd seen, I knew what to expect as far as the shimmer vanishing. I love how soft and delicate this shade is; perfect for spring.

  1. I'm so sad the shimmer doesn't show up:[ pretty color, but not unique enough without that shimmer haha

  2. This is a really pretty color, but that's too bad about the shimmer! It looks very promising in the bottle.

  3. @SeeSarahSwatch: Yeah the shimmer would have really made this something extra special. It's unique within my stash but not so much in a general sense.

@Melissa: The shimmer makes this look beyond amazing in the bottle and I think that if I hadn't already known the shimmer doesn't translate to the nail I would have been majorly disappointed. It's still very pretty but not as amazing as it could have been.

  4. It's still a super pretty color, but that sucks that it doesn't show up on the nail. I really like the color for Spring though!

  5. Shame that Essie makes its colours a bit runny sometimes. Why they paired a very light lilac with a pale microglitter, who knows. It's a nice colour, but defo not one I'd wear, but great Review. : )

  6. @Anne: Yes, still a great spring shade that I like a lot, but would have LOVED with the shimmer in it!

@Erin Does Nails: Thanks! Yeah, you'd think they would have figured out that the shimmer doesn't show up and switched it to something more prominent. Oh well...

  7. That's crazy that the shimmer doesn't show up that well, it looks really cool in the bottle! I'm sure it's easier to tell in person, or in the natural light?! I first thought you were wearing Lilacism, which is another fun color :)

  8. @Elizabeth: I can see more of the shimmer on my nail in person than the pictures show but it's still not much at all. :( This definitely has some similarities to Lilacism, which I also love. I thought they might be near-dupes but I looked up a comparison and they have more differences than I expected! Both very cute shades though!

    1. I'd agree it's not really a "must-have" but I like it. Don't blame on you on passing it over though. :)

  12. I agree with your review, I was super disappointed by the lack of glitter on the nail. Said similar things in my blog about the formula too--it wasn't very impressive. I'm excited about other colors in the collection though.

    1. I definitely like the collection overall, yes. So far of the three I've tried this easily has the worst formula though. :-/
